General Body Meeting
When: September 26, 2019
What time: 11:30 - 13:00pm
Where: ABCI Institute, 4300 Nebraska Av, Washington, DC
We would like to invite you to the ABCI general body meeting taking place on Thursday September 26 at 11:30am in Washington, DC (12:30pm in Brasilia and 5:30pm in Geneva). The meeting should last about 90 minutes and will take place at the American University Washington College of Law, 4300 Nebraska Avenue NW, Yuma Building Room CT16 (across from Tenleytown-AU metro station).
We will be first discussing recent trade developments in the United States, and around the world. Following that, ABCI’s board members will lead a discussion with our invitee Simon Lester, the associate director of Cato's Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies who will discuss about Donald Trump and the Future of U.S. Trade Policy.
The free trade vs. protectionism debate has a long history in the United States, going back to Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. It might have seemed like the debate was over, as the last few decades have seen the creation of a rules-based world trading system and a near consensus among economic experts on the value of free trade. However, the election of Donald Trump has led to a resurgence of protectionism in U.S. trade policy, along with a vigorous critique of international trade rules by the Trump administration. Can this "populist" approach to trade outlast Trump? What does the future hold for U.S. trade policy?
